Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world.

 

Founded on January 13, 1913, by twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University, the sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominately Black college educated women.  This includes over 900 chapters located in the United States, England, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea.

 

The major programs of the sorority are based upon the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust:

 

The Columbus (OH) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a 501(C)7 organization committed to primarily serving the African-American community in Franklin and surrounding counties through the Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust.

 

The Columbus (OH) Alumnae Chapter (formerly Alpha Beta Sigma) is the sixty-sixth chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and was chartered on May 20, 1934. The chapter was chartered by 23 dynamic women who had a vision and desire to serve the community.  The charter members are Lorraine Allen, Helen Banks, Bessie Beecham Giles, Grace Booker, Stella Brooks, Fairy Burrell, Ruth Carter, Edith Coleman, Elizabeth Conley, Charlotte Ellis, Blanche Evans, Catherine Fossett, Burdelle Green, Sara Jackson, Evelyn Letcher, Helen Lightfoot Langtry, Cona McNabb, Ora Mae Pate, Irene Patterson, Virgie Pearson, Virginia Stevens Smith, Viola Burks Taylor and Edith Tribbitt.  The status of honorary charter member was awarded to Edith C. Cousins on March 11, 1979 for her devoted dedication to the chapter's progress.

 

The chapter’s various projects and programs are designed to address the needs of a wide-range of community residents.  The chapter provides scholarships to graduating seniors, mentors pre-teen and teenage girls through the Delta Academy and Delta GEMS programs, inspires and empowers young men through the EMBODI program, and participates in annual community walk-a-thons.
